"You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” I love this quote from Jon Kabat-Zinn. There are moments in our lives where there is extreme uncertainty and it feels like everything is falling to pieces, but I'm starting to learn that uncertainty can feel terrifying or it can feel absolutely exhilarating. Good news is, it's always up to us which one we choose to feel.
I had a moment this morning during my gratitude practice, where I realised that the things I am most grateful for, have come from times when I have allowed myself to completely surrender to uncertainty and just ride the wave. I remembered back to the years when I was teaching and inspiring young teenagers to sing, gain confidence and love themselves unconditionally. To see where they started, watch their growth and realise the major impact I had on their lives; it was incredibly fulfilling and something I will always remember.
Looking back though, the decision to start teaching was one that I made in an incredibly uncertain time in my life. I wasn’t really sure what I was doing with my life, confused and overwhelmed, but an opportunity to teach came up and I took it, not knowing what was ahead of me and fearful that it wouldn’t work out. These ended up being some of the most incredible and impactful years of my life.
I guess we need to remind ourselves that even in the most uncertain low points in our lives, when the waves start to tower over us, we can let them drown us, or we can grab our boards and go along for the wild, exhilarating ride, knowing that something amazing is just up ahead. In the end, life has a funny way of working out. Surf's up!
